Canggu Travel Guide

A beautiful sunset over Pererenan Beach, with sun rays breaking through a cloudy sky and silhouettes of people and dogs on the wet sand at the water's edge.

Canggu is where surfers, yogis, digital nomads, trend setters and sunset chasers all seem to magically end up, and for good reason too. It is now an uber-stylish and youthful destination with hip cafés, a thriving surf scene, buzzing beach clubs, and, in parts, verdant rice paddies that run right up to the ocean.

It is a place where you can start your day with sunrise yoga, eat an organic smoothie bowl for breakfast, get some work done from a buzzing café, catch a wave in the afternoon, then end the night with live DJs and dancing on the beach.

WHY VISIT CANGGU?

Canggu has quickly grown from a sleepy surf village into one of Bali’s most sought-after destinations. The area offers a little bit of everything and is particularly attractive to a youthful crowd.  Beaches with rolling waves, boho cafes, stylish boutiques, buzzing beach clubs, and lush pockets of rice fields are just some of things to attract visitors to this part of Bali.

Surf and Beaches:

Canggu is a surf town at heart. Whether you are a beginner catching your first wave at Batu Bolong or a seasoned surfer chasing barrels at Echo Beach, the beaches here offer consistent swell and a laid-back surf culture. Black sand beaches and board rentals make it easy to hit the water any time.

Trendy Cafes and Restaurants

Food in Canggu is a big part of the experience. Think smoothie bowls, plant-based dishes, specialty coffee, and wood-fired pizza, all served in stylish, design-savvy cafes. The dining scene blends local ingredients with global trends, catering to vegans, foodies, and everyone in between. Many spots are photogenic, with tropical décor and rice field views.

Beach Clubs and Nightlife

When the sun starts to set, Canggu comes alive with music and cocktails. Beach clubs like The Lawn, Finns and Atlas offer daybeds, DJs, and ocean views. Later on, bars and late-night venues keep the energy going. The scene is social but more casual than Seminyak.

Creative and Digital Nomad Scene

Canggu has become a hub for freelancers, start-up founders, and content creators. Coworking spaces like Dojo and BWork offer fast Wi-Fi, networking events, and communal energy. Add in smoothie bars, gyms, and like-minded people, and it is easy to see why Canggu attracts a global crowd looking to work and live with flexibility.

Laid-back Atmosphere

Despite its popularity, Canggu has held onto its chill character (so long as you can look past the grid-locked traffic at times). Mornings might start with yoga, afternoons with beach hangs or a bit of work, and evenings with sunset drinks. It is this mix of freedom, friendliness, and tropical style that keeps people coming back and staying longer.

Shopping and Markets

Canggu is full of independent boutiques, local designers, and markets selling everything from fashion to homeware. It is the place to find handmade jewellery, woven bags, natural skincare, and surf clothing. Markets like Love Anchor and La Brisa’s Sunday Bazaar are popular for browsing in a relaxed, open-air setting.

Yoga and Wellness

Balance out the surf and nightlife with a dose of wellness. Canggu has yoga studios offering everything from vinyasa flow to sound healing. Spas and massage centres are everywhere, with treatments ranging from traditional Balinese massages to holistic therapies. It is a great spot to recharge your body and mind.

Sunsets

Canggu sunsets are some of the best you will find in Bali. As the sky turns shades of pink and orange, locals and visitors alike gather on the beach, surfboards and beers in hand. Whether you are at a beachfront bar or sitting on the sand, it is a daily ritual that never gets old.

WHERE TO GO IN CANGGU

Batu Bolong

Batu Bolong is the beating heart of Canggu.  It is lively, social, and always buzzing. You will find a mix of surf, shopping, and stylish cafes lining the main street all the way down to the beach. The waves here are beginner-friendly, and the beach itself is a great place to watch the sunset with a cold drink. Restaurants, coworking spaces, and boutique stores give Batu Bolong a trendy, international vibe, while still holding onto its laid-back Bali charm. Expect plenty of scooter traffic, yoga studios, and younger people in boardshorts or activewear all day long.

Echo Beach

Just north of Batu Bolong, Echo Beach has a more rugged and surf-focused vibe. It is a hotspot for experienced surfers drawn to its consistent reef breaks, and its darker sand and crashing waves give it a wilder feel. The beach is lined with a mix of casual warungs and upmarket spots perfect for sunset cocktails. While still busy, Echo feels slightly more relaxed and edgy compared to Batu Bolong. You will find beachfront villas, boutique stays, and hidden cafes tucked away from the main road, making it popular with creatives and travellers seeking a cool but quieter base.

Berawa

Berawa sits between Canggu and Seminyak, blending elements of both. It is known for the huge Finns Beach Club, which anchors the area’s social scene, and the beach itself is long and wide with a mix of surf and sun. Inland, Berawa is packed with cafes, coworking spaces, gyms, padel courts and trendy stores. This area has become a favourite with expats and digital nomads looking for modern conveniences with a chill vibe. Berawa feels a little more developed and structured than central Canggu, but it still keeps that laid-back lifestyle Bali is famous for.

Pererenan

Pererenan is the quieter, more refined side of Canggu.  It is just a short scooter ride past Echo Beach, but with a noticeably calmer pace. It still has surf and rice fields, but the vibe here is more peaceful, with fewer crowds and less traffic. The beach is popular with surfers and sunset walkers, while inland, you will find stylish villas, boutique cafes, and a growing number of restaurants that lean more local and artisanal. Pererenan attracts those who want Canggu’s lifestyle without the chaos. Creative travellers, couples, and expats who prefer serenity over scene. It is still Bali cool, just with a bit more breathing room.

THINGS TO DO IN CANGGU

Catch a Wave

Whether you’re learning or a seasoned surfer, the beaches here are made for it. Surf lessons are easy to find along Batu Bolong and Echo Beach.

Stretch and Reconnect

Wellness is big here. Drop into The Practice, Samadi, or Desa Seni for yoga, breathwork, and sound healing.

Spa Day

From luxury treatments at Spring Spa to wallet-friendly massages on every corner, relaxation is part of the lifestyle here.  Definitely try out a Japanese bathhouse style treatment at Fresh! Aqua Beauty Lounge.

Shop the Boho Way

Wander through Love Anchor Market (especially on a Sunday), boutique fashion stores, and home décor shops with handmade local pieces and Aussie beach style.

Watch the Sunset

Canggu sunsets are iconic. Grab a beanbag and Bintang at Echo Beach, or book a rooftop table at The Lawn or Ji.  Hippie Fish is a great spot for some cocktails and seafood snack as the sun goes down.

GETTING AROUND CANGGU

Getting around Canggu is part of the adventure, and often the challenge! The area is not very walkable, as destinations are spread out and footpaths are limited. The most popular and practical way to get around is by scooter. It is affordable, convenient, and gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Just be prepared for traffic and narrow roads, especially around Batu Bolong and Berawa during peak hours. If you are not confident riding yourself, the rideshare apps like Gojek and Grab are widely used for scooters and cars alike. They are reliable and normally cheaper than taxis.

Bluebird taxis are harder to come by in Canggu, and local taxi services can be expensive and reluctant to use meters, usually demanding high prices especially at night or when it is busy.

Parking can be tight, so wherever you go, try to arrive early or be ready to walk a little. If you plan to party or explore the beach clubs at night, it is wise to arrange a ride home ahead of time.

Try to choose your accommodation based on the nearby places that you may wish to explore – having the luxury of a favourite café or restaurant within easy walking distance will ensure you enjoy your time in Canggu a lot more.
